Can you monetize AI videos? YouTube's rules in plain English

AI is allowed. Mass-produced, repetitive content isn't. Here is where the line is and how to stay on the right side.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • YouTube doesn't ban AI. It demonetizes content that is mass-produced, repetitive or low-effort, whether AI made it or not.
  • The old 'repetitious content' rule is now called 'inauthentic content'.
  • Realistic synthetic content (fake real people or events) must be disclosed.

What YouTube actually targets

The monetization policy is about value and originality, not about the tool. Channels lose monetization when their videos look like they come off a template with little or no change: the same structure, the same voice, the same kind of footage, uploaded in high volume, with nothing that makes each video worth watching.

What keeps an AI channel safe

What gets channels into trouble

Disclosure

When you upload, YouTube asks whether the video contains realistic altered or synthetic content. Say yes when it shows real people doing or saying things they didn't, or realistic events that never happened. Clearly unrealistic content (animation, fantasy) and AI used only for help with scripts or images usually doesn't need the label.

Policies change. Check YouTube's monetization policies in the Help Center before you scale a format.
